Vinyl Plank vs. Vinyl Tile
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is commonly sold in plank format, while luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is commonly tile-format flooring; LVT can also be used as a broader category name. Both can be planned here when sold by carton.
Why Carton Coverage Matters
Carton coverage, not nominal plank size, is the purchase value. Karndean's Natural Red Oak RCP6552 lists dimensions and box coverage separately, so enter the coverage for the exact SKU rather than deriving it from dimensions.
How Much Extra Vinyl Flooring Should I Buy?
The editable 10% starting allowance can cover cuts, fitting loss, damaged pieces, and future repair stock. It is not a universal recommendation or guarantee; use your product guidance and project plan.
Cuts, Leftovers, and Future Repairs
An allowance is material you intentionally plan before carton rounding. Leftovers may not all be useful for repairs, so choose an amount based on the cuts and spare stock you actually expect.
Straight, Diagonal, and Herringbone Layouts
Complex layouts such as diagonal or herringbone patterns can require more material. Follow the flooring manufacturer or installer's layout guidance and adjust the allowance yourself; this calculator does not apply a layout multiplier.
Click-Lock vs. Glue-Down Vinyl
Click-lock, glue-down, and loose-lay products can each be carton-planned, but installation method does not change this carton formula. Karndean's US installation guides organizes separate guides for different product and installation types.
SPC vs. WPC vs. Traditional LVT
SPC and WPC describe construction, not a carton-math factor. COREtec's COREtec Originals provides WPC examples, while Shaw Floors's Everlasting Plus, Wild Dunes provides an SPC example; use the carton coverage for the selected product.
Coverage per Carton vs. Plank Size
Pieces per carton can be useful for inventory, but it does not establish coverage. The manufacturer's or retailer's stated carton coverage remains authoritative.
Why Whole Cartons Create Extra Material
Required coverage is divided by carton coverage and rounded up. The difference between purchased coverage and required coverage is Package-Rounding Extra. It is not another name for your extra flooring allowance.
Vinyl Flooring With Attached Underlayment
Some vinyl flooring has an attached pad. Check the exact product before ordering separate underlayment; this calculator does not estimate underlayment rolls or packages.
Glue-Down Vinyl and Adhesive
Glue-down vinyl may need a separate adhesive estimate based on the adhesive manufacturer's published coverage. Karndean's Gluedown US/Canada guide is product-specific installation context, not an adhesive prescription or quantity table.
Flooring Around Cabinets and Fixed Fixtures
Decide the actual area to receive flooring before entering Project Area. Product instructions can differ; the Karndean's Rigid-core plank and tile guide discusses permanent fixtures for that rigid-core product, so do not treat it as universal advice for every vinyl floor.
Vinyl Plank/Tile vs. Sheet Vinyl
This calculator is for vinyl plank and tile sold by the carton. Sheet vinyl uses roll-width and pattern-layout calculations and is not included.
How the Calculator Works
Required Coverage = Project Area × (1 + Allowance ÷ 100)
Cartons to Buy = round up (Required Coverage ÷ Coverage per Carton)
Purchased Coverage = Cartons to Buy × Coverage per Carton
Package-Rounding Extra = Purchased Coverage − Required Coverage
For a carton price, cost uses cartons to buy. For a per-area price, it uses purchased coverage, because cartons are bought whole.
Worked Example
For a 300 sq ft project with a 10% allowance and 19.69 sq ft per carton, required coverage is 300 × 1.10 = 330 sq ft. Seventeen cartons provide 17 × 19.69 = 334.73 sq ft.
The 30 sq ft Extra Flooring Allowance was chosen before carton rounding. The 4.73 sq ft Package-Rounding Extra is the remaining purchased coverage after buying 17 whole cartons. They are different concepts.

No. It is for vinyl plank and tile sold by carton. Sheet vinyl needs a roll-width, seam, orientation, pattern-repeat, and cut-plan calculation.
Is 10% extra flooring always enough?
No. Ten percent is an editable starting setting, not a manufacturer promise. Choose an allowance for the exact product, room, layout, cuts, and repair-stock plan.
Should I use carton price or price per square foot?
Use the current carton price when available. A displayed per-area rate can be useful for planning, but retailers may round it or price cartons differently.
