How Much Grout Do I Need?
The most purchase-ready estimate starts with the current coverage on your grout package or product data sheet. Enter the tiled area, coverage per package, and an extra grout allowance; the calculator rounds the result up to whole packages. If you do not have a product yet, Detailed Geometry estimates the theoretical volume of the joints.
Keep the allowance and package rounding separate. The allowance is added before purchasing to cover reasonable project variation. Package-rounding extra is the capacity left after the adjusted requirement is rounded up to whole packages.
What Affects Grout Coverage?
Coverage changes with tile length and width, joint width, filled joint depth, and total tiled area. The grout formulation, tile surface and profile, joint preparation, setting material in the joints, installation method, and cleanup loss can also change actual consumption. This is why two products used on the same layout may list different coverage.
Tile Size and Grout Usage
Smaller tiles create more joint length across the same floor or wall, so they generally require more grout when joint width and depth stay the same. For mosaics, enter one individual tile's dimensions—not the mesh sheet dimensions—because the joints repeat around each piece.
Why Grout Joint Width Matters
A wider joint has more cross-sectional area and therefore more volume. Measure the intended finished joint, and confirm that the selected grout allows that width. Sanded, unsanded, fine-aggregate, ready-to-use, and epoxy products can have different permitted ranges.
Why Tile Thickness Matters
Tile thickness provides a practical starting point for theoretical joint depth. Thicker tile can create a deeper space to fill, but the entire tile thickness is not always the finished grout depth. Mortar or adhesive may occupy part of the joint below the grout.
Tile Thickness vs. Actual Grout Depth
When filled depth is blank, the calculator uses tile thickness as the theoretical depth. Enter a separate filled depth when you have a reliable project value. Manufacturer guidance may set minimum placement depth—for example, MAPEI states that its cement grout needs two-thirds of the tile thickness—so do not treat a shallow estimate as installation approval.
Manufacturer Coverage vs. Calculated Joint Volume
Manufacturer Coverage converts a product's listed area yield directly into whole packages. Detailed Geometry calculates the empty joint volume. It converts volume to weight only if you supply a density for the actual product, and it calculates packages only if you also supply package weight. MeasureTally does not assume a universal density because grout density varies by formulation.
Preferred purchase basis: use the current coverage for the specific grout product, tile size, joint width, and depth when the manufacturer provides it.
Sanded, Unsanded, Fine-Aggregate, Premixed, and Epoxy Grout
These labels describe different formulations, not interchangeable density presets. Traditional cement grouts may be sanded or unsanded; newer cement products can use fine aggregate. Ready-to-use premixed and multi-component epoxy grouts have their own handling, compatibility, coverage, and package instructions. Select the product separately, then use its published values in the calculator.
Floor, Wall, Backsplash, and Shower Grout
The geometry applies to tiled floors, walls, and backsplashes when the entered area and joint dimensions describe the installation. Showers and other wet or specialty areas require separate checks for product suitability, waterproofing system compatibility, movement joints, cure time, and maintenance. A quantity result does not make those decisions.
How the Grout Formula Works
Detailed Geometry treats the joints around a repeating rectangular tile as a theoretical volume. All dimensions are converted consistently before the result is reported in liters.
Joint volume per area = ((tile length + tile width) × joint width × joint depth) ÷ (tile length × tile width)
Base grout volume = tiled area × joint volume per area
Adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + allowance percentage)
Estimated weight = adjusted volume × entered product density
Packages = estimated weight ÷ package weight, rounded up
The geometric result is theoretical. It does not model every tile edge, spacer, lug, surface texture, irregular shape, or jobsite loss. The manufacturer's formula, coverage chart, and instructions remain the authority for a specific product.
Worked Example
Consider a 100 sq ft bathroom floor using a 12 × 12 in tile that is 3/8 in thick, with a 1/8 in grout joint. Leaving filled depth blank uses the 3/8 in thickness as the theoretical depth.
The joint geometry produces a base theoretical volume of 1.8435447 L. A 10% extra grout allowanceadds 0.18435447 L, giving an adjusted theoretical volume of 2.02789917 L.
This example intentionally stops at theoretical volume. For purchase planning, current manufacturer coverage for the specific grout product is preferred when available; no generic bag count is reliable across formulations.

How do I calculate how much grout I need?

Should I use manufacturer coverage or tile dimensions?
Use current manufacturer coverage for the exact grout product when it is available. It accounts for that formulation and is the preferred basis for a purchase-ready estimate. Tile dimensions provide a useful theoretical volume when product coverage is not yet known.
What grout depth should I enter?
Enter the depth the joint will actually be filled. If you leave it blank, the calculator uses tile thickness as a theoretical default. Check product and installation instructions because setting material, joint preparation, and the grout system can change the fill depth.
Can I use sheet dimensions for mosaic tile?
No. Enter the length and width of one individual mosaic tile, not the mesh sheet. The formula needs the repeating tile size and the joint around each piece.
Does this calculator choose a grout type?
No. It estimates quantity only. Joint-width ranges, tile compatibility, stain or chemical resistance, wet-area use, and installation requirements are product-selection questions that should be checked with the grout manufacturer.
