How Much Thinset Do I Need?
Start with two things: the area you are tiling and the coverage published for the mortar you plan to buy. Add an allowance for normal application losses, divide by coverage per package, and round up to whole packages. If the manufacturer gives a range, use its lower yield for a conservative purchase recommendation.
This method works for quantity planning on floors, walls, backsplashes, and bathroom projects when you have an applicable manufacturer coverage figure. It does not decide whether a mortar is suitable for your tile, substrate, or shower system.

Why Trowel Size Changes Mortar Usage
Trowel size strongly affects mortar usage, but the same trowel can produce different coverage with different mortars.
The notch shape and dimensions affect the mortar ridges placed on the surface. For example, the ARDEX X 5 product page lists different approximate yields for different notches. A square notch, V-notch, U-notch, or Euro-notch is not interchangeable simply because one dimension looks similar.
Find the row that matches your planned trowel. This calculator does not turn a notch size into an assumed spread rate or choose the right trowel for the installation.
Why There Is No Universal Coverage per Bag
Mortar formulation matters. A coverage figure from one product is not automatically valid for another, even when the package weights or trowels match. Lightweight mortars make this especially clear: CUSTOM's ProLite information describes comparable coverage from a lighter package than traditional mortar.
Package weight is not an input or a multiplier here. MeasureTally does not assume a universal mortar density, a standard number of square feet per bag, or a linear relationship between weight and yield.
How to Read a Manufacturer Coverage Chart
- Confirm the exact mortar product, formulation, and package you intend to purchase.
- Open its current bag instructions, technical data sheet, or manufacturer calculator. Find the coverage row for the planned trowel notch and application.
- Check the units. Area and yield must both use square feet or both use square meters.
- For a single yield, fill only Minimum Coverage per Package. For a range, enter the lower and upper values separately.
- Read the chart notes for exclusions, tile-back conditions, and application assumptions.
The FlexBond-LFT coverage chart and notes illustrate why the row and its footnotes belong together: its estimating coverage does not include additional back-buttering. Do not apply that product's chart to an unrelated mortar.
Minimum vs. Maximum Coverage
A lower coverage value means each package covers less area, so more packages may be needed. The minimum yield is therefore the purchase-planning basis. The maximum yield provides the best-case whole-package count.
When a manufacturer publishes a range, MeasureTally uses the lower coverage value for the purchase recommendation.
The expected package range is shown only when the two whole-package counts differ. If both ends round up to four packages, the recommendation is simply four packages—not a 4–4 range. The range describes manufacturer yield variation, not uncertainty in the calculator's arithmetic.
Coverage per Package vs. Mortar Contact Coverage
Coverage per package is material yield, expressed in sq ft/package or m²/package. It estimates how much surface area a package can serve under the published conditions.
Mortar contact coverage is the percentage of a tile's underside actually in contact with mortar. It is an installation-quality measure, not a bag-yield figure. CUSTOM's product instructions discuss tile-back contact separately from the estimating coverage chart.
Never enter a tile-contact percentage as coverage per package or use it to scale the manufacturer's yield. This calculator cannot inspect mortar transfer beneath a tile.
Large-Format Tile and Back-Troweling
Tile-back shape and application technique affect mortar use. Additional mortar on the back of a tile may be needed under the product or installation instructions. LATICRETE's trowel selection and back-buttering guidance explains the role of trowel choice and tile-back contact.
Manufacturer coverage may not include mortar applied to the back of the tile. Check the current product instructions when additional back-troweling is required.
There is no universal back-troweling multiplier in this calculator. Do not assume a fixed extra percentage will cover every tile profile or large-format installation.
Mortar Contact in Dry and Wet Areas
Dry-area, wet-area, and exterior instructions may specify different mortar contact coverage requirements. These are requirements for contact beneath the tile, not estimates of how many square feet a package will cover. Read the applicable manufacturer contact-coverage instructions and the instructions for the complete installation system.
A successful quantity calculation is not evidence of adequate mortar contact, waterproofing, wet-area suitability, or compliance. Verify those separately with the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
Substrate Flatness and Mortar Usage
Thinset mortar is not a substitute for correcting an out-of-flat substrate.
Check the surface before estimating installation materials. CUSTOM's substrate preparation guidance distinguishes bonding mortar from leveling materials. Any necessary flattening or leveling is separate preparation work, not an extra-mortar mode in this calculator.
Modified vs. Unmodified Mortar
Modified and unmodified mortars are not interchangeable in every system. Their suitability depends on current product, tile, substrate, and membrane instructions. A quantity result cannot approve porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, a particular substrate, or a wet-area assembly.
Choose a compatible product using those instructions first; then bring its applicable coverage to the calculator. MeasureTally does not select a mortar chemistry or certify an installation method.
Thinset and Uncoupling / Heating Membranes
Mortar used to install, fill, or cover a membrane may require a separate calculation.
One calculation represents one mortar application and one applicable manufacturer coverage basis. It does not combine mortar below a membrane, membrane embedment, cavity filling, and the tile-setting layer. Schluter's ALL-SET instructions distinguish membrane work from tile setting; follow the current instructions for your exact system, including any heating membrane.
When the system requires multiple applications, calculate each using its own coverage basis. Do not count a layer twice if the manufacturer's published figure already includes it.
How the Calculator Works
Adjusted Area = Tiled Area × (1 + Allowance ÷ 100)
Packages to Buy = round up (Adjusted Area ÷ Minimum Coverage)
Best-Case Packages = round up (Adjusted Area ÷ Maximum Coverage)
Package-Rounding Extra = (Packages to Buy × Minimum Coverage) − Adjusted Area
The best-case calculation is optional. Purchase quantities use exact decimal arithmetic at package boundaries. Exact division adds no extra package; any positive fraction requires another whole package. Cost, when supplied, is the conservative purchase quantity multiplied by your price per package.
Package-rounding extra comes from buying whole packages and is separate from the extra mortar allowance.
It describes extra coverage capacity under the entered yield—not a prediction of unused mortar. With a range, that capacity uses the lower published coverage value.
What the default allowance means
The 10% Extra Mortar Allowance is MeasureTally's conservative planning default, informed by manufacturer overage guidance such as the MAPEI mortar calculator. It is not a universal manufacturer requirement. Adjust it for your project and current product guidance.
Allows for normal jobsite variation, mixing loss, and application loss.
This allowance does not automatically account for substantial back-troweling or mortar used for separate membrane layers.
You may enter zero or leave the allowance blank for no extra allowance. Above 25%, the calculator gives a non-blocking sanity warning. That threshold is a MeasureTally interface choice—not an industry maximum or manufacturer limit. Negative allowances are not accepted.
Changing units converts your current area and coverage inputs instead of clearing them. The area conversion is exactly 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m². Reset clears the form and returns the calculator to its default settings.
Worked Example
Consider a 300 sq ft tile project with an illustrative manufacturer coverage range of 80–95 sq ft/package and a 10% Extra Mortar Allowance. These are example inputs, not a universal yield or a claim about a specific product.
Adjusted area: 300 × 1.10 = 330 sq ft
Best case: 330 ÷ 95 = 3.47… → 4 packages
Conservative case: 330 ÷ 80 = 4.125 → 5 packages
Expected range: 4–5 packages
Purchase recommendation: 5 packages
Conservative package capacity: 5 × 80 = 400 sq ft
Package-rounding extra: 400 − 330 = 70 sq ft
The 30 sq ft allowance was added before dividing by yield. The additional 70 sq ft of capacity comes from purchasing whole packages at the lower coverage value. These are separate steps, not two names for the same allowance.

- Verify the exact product, package, trowel row, units, and current coverage notes.
- Confirm whether the published yield includes tile-back mortar or any membrane work.
- Address substrate preparation and confirm mortar compatibility separately.
- Use the conservative whole-package recommendation for planning; check pricing and package availability with your supplier.
FAQ
How do I calculate how much thinset mortar I need?
Multiply your tiled area by one plus your extra mortar allowance as a decimal. Divide that adjusted area by the manufacturer's minimum coverage per package for your exact mortar and trowel notch, then round up to whole packages.
What if the manufacturer gives only one coverage value?
Enter that value as Minimum Coverage per Package and leave Maximum Coverage blank. The calculator gives one purchase recommendation. Equal minimum and maximum values are also allowed; it never displays a redundant range such as 4–4 packages.
Does the 10% allowance cover back-troweling or membranes?
Not automatically. The default allows for normal jobsite variation, mixing loss, and application loss. Substantial back-troweling and separate membrane applications need their own manufacturer guidance or separate calculations.
Can I estimate thinset from package weight alone?
